“This video was taken in the field by a NBPS member on Oct 19, 2022, during a Project Lifesaver search and rescue exercise (SAREX). It shows the final stage of locating our volunteer who was acting as a missing person equipped with a Project Lifesaver transmitter. The missing person had wandered off from a hiking trail, through an industrial area, and into a wilderness area. Ground teams were unable to pick up a signal because the missing person was on the far side of a rocky hill. However, the BAYSAR team in the helicopter were able to home in on the signal and locate the missing person. This joint SAREX, using air and ground teams trained as Electronic Search Specialists in coordination with an Incident Commander, shows how efficient a Project Lifesaver search and rescue can be. Once the air team located a strong signal from the missing person’s transmitter, the helicopter hovered over the missing person until a ground team completed the rescue. It took less than 15 minutes to complete the rescue once the helicopter arrived on scene.”
