About BAYSAR

Volunteer. Support. Community.

At BAYSAR, we strengthen our community by promoting safety. This is achieved through the close teamwork of our members and partners, as we assist with search and rescue taskings, provide community safety programs, and promote and provide Project Lifesaver services. Together, these efforts create a real difference for everyone in our North Bay and surrounding communities.

Who are we

Our History, Our Principles, Our Service

BAYSAR, based in North Bay, is a proud member of the Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association (OSARVA). We are funded through local donations, membership fees, and volunteer fundraising activities, including Blue Sky Bingo sessions. Our commitment to high standards of training and readiness ensures we are always prepared to respond to emergencies 24/7, much like volunteer firefighters. Our dedicated ground search teams and aircrew members are well-trained, motivated, and experienced.

Over the past 30 years, BAYSAR volunteers have participated in numerous air and ground searches across North Bay and surrounding areas, earning accolades from police forces and the Canadian military. Our air searches have included missions aboard Royal Canadian Air Force SAR C-130 Hercules and Griffon helicopters, as well as our own civilian aircraft, covering vast areas from Thunder Bay to North Eastern Quebec, Toronto, and James Bay.

In addition to our search and rescue efforts, BAYSAR is actively involved in Project Lifesaver. This program helps locate and rescue individuals with cognitive disorders who are at risk of wandering. By using advanced tracking technology and working closely with local police, BAYSAR enhances community safety and provides peace of mind to families

BAYSAR is foremost a local community service organization.  As a member of OSARVA, BAYSAR also provides ‘Adventure Smart’ programs, including ‘Hug a Tree and Survive,’ aimed at reducing the number and severity of search and rescue incidents.

Recently, you may be familiar with our “Let us see you wear your PFD” survey and public safety promotion, as well as our assistance to the MNRF in locating illegal gill nets in Lake Nipissing. Additionally, BAYSAR works closely with the North Bay Police Service through a formal Memorandum of Understanding. Our involvement with Project Lifesaver further exemplifies our commitment to community safety. This program helps locate and rescue individuals with cognitive disorders who are at risk of wandering, using advanced tracking technology and close collaboration with local police
