September 2021 OSARVA Training

Sept 2021 BAYSAR did the official OSARVA training and it was awesome. The bulk majority of was compass training which is incredibly crucial if your GPS no longer works and you need to get yourself out. We started of just by using the compass with a heading to go in a straight line and back to where you started. This was all done in fairly thick bush so you couldn’t see more then 100 feet in front of you and you had to return to your spot within about 10 feet or so of where you started. Before I go any further with this you may be asking; how do you know when to turn around and come back?; well this was all because of pacing. We had to figure out what pacing is (how many steps per 100 metres) and then from there we will know how far we have gone. So on top of making sure we are heading in the right direction we also had to keep track of our paces so we knew when it was time to turn to a different heading.

The two biggest ones we did was a night test where we walked (if I remember correctly) about a 1 km
